The two numbers a refrigerator has

Almost every mistake in this category comes from reading one of them and not the other.

Running draw: about 150 watts, averaged. A domestic refrigerator does not draw continuously. The compressor runs in cycles, and averaged across an hour a typical unit lands near 150W — less than two old light bulbs.

Starting draw: 500 to 1,000 watts, briefly. Every time that compressor starts, its motor asks for several times its running current for a fraction of a second. A generator that cannot supply that surge trips, and the fridge never starts at all.

How long food actually lasts without power

This decides how you run the generator, and it is the most useful thing on the page.

These are the standard US food-safety guidance intervals, and they assume the door stays shut. Every opening resets the clock downwards.

The consequence is that you do not need to run a generator continuously to keep food safe. Running it for a couple of hours every four or five brings the fridge back down, and the freezer needs even less attention.

Block running is the whole strategy

Continuous running at roughly 0.75 gallons an hour is around 18 gallons a day, which is more than most garages may legally store and more than the job requires.

Running in blocks — two hours on, four off, across the daylight hours — keeps a fridge and freezer perfectly safe and cuts the fuel bill by two-thirds or better. The fuel consumption page works the arithmetic through with current EIA prices.

Two practical notes on block running. Start the generator before plugging the fridge in, so the compressor start lands on a machine already at speed. And leave the freezer connected during the same blocks — it costs almost nothing extra and buys you an enormous thermal margin.

Where the generator has to be

Not in the garage, not on the porch, not in a breezeway, and not under an open window. Carbon monoxide from a portable generator has killed people who thought an open door was ventilation.

The quiet alternative for exactly this job

A refrigerator is close to the ideal battery load: modest average draw, a manageable surge, and hours of thermal buffer that let you run it intermittently.

The noise floor is the reason to prefer an inverter for this job specifically. Keeping food cold is a multi-day activity, and a machine running in the driveway for three days at 65 dBA is a different experience from one at 52.

Champion 100692 2000W Ultralight Inverter

A 2,000W-class ultralight inverter you can carry one-handed.

If the goal is genuinely just the refrigerator, this is enough machine and it is easy to move — which matters, because the generator has to sit well away from the house and the fridge does not.

Small also means it sips fuel at this load, and fuel is the recurring cost of a multi-day outage.

The honest catch: a small tank means more frequent refueling, and refueling is when a hot generator and a can of gasoline are in the same place. A proper can is not optional.

The distinction that justifies the price here is duty. A machine that runs for six hours a day across a week is being asked to do something genuinely different from one that runs a tailgate.

The honest catch: for the refrigerator alone the cheaper units in this class do the identical job, and will keep doing it for most people.

The realistic case for spending more is that a refrigerator is rarely the only thing you end up wanting. A freezer in the garage, the furnace fan in winter, the network — the list grows during the outage, not before it.

Remote start is genuinely useful for food-safety duty, because block running means starting and stopping the machine several times a day.

The honest catch: more fuel per hour for loads that do not need it. Running a 3,700W machine on a 150W fridge is wasteful.

Skip it ifthe refrigerator really is the whole list. This is twice the machine.

How these were chosen

We did not test these. Nobody at Watt & Warden has plugged one in. What we did instead: read the manufacturer's published specifications, compile them into a table where the figures line up, and compute the numbers manufacturers leave out — runtime against a real appliance load, and what an hour of running actually costs.

Questions people actually ask

What size generator do I need to run a refrigerator?

A 2,000W-class machine with about 1,800 running watts is comfortable. The refrigerator averages roughly 150W but asks for 500 to 1,000W for the fraction of a second the compressor starts, and it is that surge the generator has to cover. Anything in this class does, with room for a freezer and lighting alongside.

Will a 1000 watt generator run a refrigerator?

Often, but with no margin. A refrigerator's starting surge can reach 1,000W on its own, which is the entire output of that machine, so nothing else can be running at that moment. A 2,000W-class unit costs little more and removes the problem entirely.

How long can a refrigerator go without power?

About four hours with the door shut, and a full freezer holds about 48 hours. That is why continuous generator running is unnecessary: two hours on and four off keeps everything safe, and cuts fuel use by two-thirds compared with running around the clock.

How much gas does it take to run a fridge on a generator?

Far less than continuous running suggests. At roughly 0.75 gallons an hour, block running for six hours a day is about four and a half gallons -- one can. Running continuously for the same day is around 18 gallons, which is more than most residential garages may legally store.
