What size generator do I need for my house?

Add the running watts of everything that must stay on, then add only the single largest starting surge -- not all of them. For a typical house with a fridge, a furnace fan, a sump pump and lights, that comes to about 3,000W peak, so a 3,500 to 5,300 running watt machine covers it. A well pump pushes it to 6,000-7,000W, and central air conditioning to 12,000W or a standby installation.

How long do power outages usually last?

The EIA's Electric Power Annual for 2024 records an average of eleven hours per U.S. customer across the year -- about two from ordinary faults and nearly nine from major events. The spread is enormous: South Carolina averaged nearly 53 hours in 2024 while Arizona, the Dakotas and Massachusetts averaged under two. Your own utility publishes your local figure and it is worth more than the average.

Should I buy a generator or a power station?

It depends on how long your power is off. Under about eight hours, a battery -- silent, safe indoors, no fuel, no maintenance, and it starts every time. Over a day, a generator, because a battery holds a fixed amount of energy and a generator with fuel does not. For multi-day outages, both used together beats either alone.

Will a power station run my refrigerator?

It has to clear two bars. The inverter must supply the starting surge -- Champion's published range for a domestic fridge is 800-1,200W -- and the battery must hold enough watt-hours for the runtime you want. A 300W inverter fails the first test regardless of capacity. A 1,000Wh station with an 1,800W inverter passes both and gives roughly six hours at a 150W average draw.

How much does it cost to run a generator?

At 0.75 gallons an hour and the EIA's reported $4.071 per gallon for the week ending 31 August 2026, continuous running is about $73 a day. Running in six-hour blocks -- which keeps a fridge and freezer perfectly safe -- costs about $18. Block running is the realistic plan, and it needs three fuel cans over three days rather than eleven.

How far should a generator be from the house?

At least twenty feet, with the exhaust pointed away from every door, window and vent. Never in a garage, basement, crawlspace or shed, including with the door open, and CPSC names porches and carports as too close as well. Nearly 100 people a year in the United States die of carbon monoxide poisoning from portable generators.

Can I plug a generator into a wall outlet?

No. Backfeeding through a wall outlet with a double-male cord energizes the utility line at lethal voltage and can kill the lineworker restoring your street. It also leaves live exposed prongs and bypasses your breakers. Use a transfer switch or an interlock kit, fitted by a licensed electrician.

How long does food last in the fridge without power?

The USDA's guidance is four hours for perishable food in a refrigerator, 48 hours in a full freezer and 24 in a half-full one -- all provided the doors stay closed. After four hours, refrigerated meat, poultry, fish, eggs and leftovers should be discarded, and you should never taste food to check it.

What is the difference between watts and watt-hours?

Watts is how much power something uses at any instant -- the width of the pipe. Watt-hours is how much energy is stored -- the size of the tank. A battery needs enough watts to start your appliance and enough watt-hours to keep it running, and those are two separate tests that people routinely confuse.

Do I add starting watts for every appliance?

No, and this is the most common sizing error. Add all the running watts, then add only the single largest starting surge. Motors almost never start at the same instant, and summing every surge typically doubles the answer and sends people home with a machine two sizes too big.

Are solar generators worth it?

Only if your outages outlast the battery. For a four-hour outage the battery never empties and the panel contributes nothing. For a three-day regional outage where gas station pumps have no power, the panel is the only recharge path that still works -- which for hurricane regions is a real and decisive advantage.

Do solar panels work on cloudy days?

Yes, at heavily reduced output. Panels convert diffuse light as well as direct sunlight, so an overcast day produces a fraction of clear-sky output rather than nothing. Plan on it extending your battery's life rather than refilling it, and assume very little in a winter storm.

Is a dual-fuel generator worth it?

In a regional outage, yes, and it is the best-value upgrade at most price points. Gas station pumps are electric, so gasoline becomes unobtainable for days while propane is still sold from unpowered exchange cages. Propane also stores for years and does not gum a carburetor. You give up 10-15% of rated output on propane.

Can a generator run in the rain?

Not uncovered. Water in the outlets or the alternator causes short circuits and electrocution risk. Use a purpose-built generator cover or an open-sided shelter that keeps rain off while leaving all four sides open for airflow. Never a tarp -- it traps exhaust, blocks cooling and can catch fire on a hot muffler.

How long does a portable power station last before it wears out?

Modern LiFePO4 units publish 3,000 to 6,000 charge cycles, which at any realistic usage rate is decades. Read the endpoint alongside the number, though: 4,000 cycles to 70% capacity is a more permissive test than 3,500 to 80%, so headline figures are not comparable across brands.

Do I need a transfer switch?

Only if you want to power hard-wired equipment -- a furnace, a well pump, a sump pump. Running extension cords to a fridge and some lamps needs nothing installed. The switch is what reaches the circuits a cord cannot, and it needs an electrician and usually a permit.

Does the internet work during a power outage?

It depends on your provider's street equipment, not just yours. Cable nodes typically have a few hours of battery backup and then drop regardless. Fiber is often more resilient because the street network is passive. Test it during a brief outage with your router on a battery before deciding what to buy.

Do power outages damage appliances?

The outage itself rarely does -- being off is not harmful. The damage comes from the voltage sag that often precedes an outage and the surge when power is restored. Unplug sensitive electronics at the start of the outage rather than the end, and bring things back gradually afterwards.

What backup power do I need for a sump pump?

A dedicated 12V battery backup pump if your basement has ever taken water -- it is automatic, so it works while you are asleep or at work, and it covers primary pump failure as well as power failure. A power station works if the inverter is large enough: a half-horsepower pump needs up to 2,150W to start.
