This site publishes information, not electrical or safety advice for your specific situation.

Backup power equipment is genuinely dangerous when used incorrectly. Portable generators produce carbon monoxide, which is colorless, odorless and kills people in the United States every year. Connecting a generator to house wiring incorrectly can electrocute a utility worker. Working inside an electrical panel can kill you.

Specifically, and without limitation:

• Never run a generator indoors, in a garage, a basement, a crawlspace, a shed, on a porch or in a carport — including with a door open. Outdoors only, at least twenty feet from the house, exhaust pointed away from every door, window and vent. The full safety guidance.
• Never backfeed a generator into a wall outlet. Use a transfer switch or an interlock kit, installed by a licensed electrician.
• Have electrical work done by a licensed electrician, with the permits your jurisdiction requires.
• Follow the manufacturer's manual for your specific equipment. Where anything here conflicts with it, the manual wins.
• Fit working carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home if you use or intend to use a generator.

Nothing on this site replaces a qualified professional who can see your home, your panel and your local code.

Accuracy

We work hard to get this right. Every specification is sourced to a manufacturer's published figure, every statistic to a named dataset with its date, and every calculation shows its inputs so you can check it. The method, including where it is weaker than a test bench.

We still cannot guarantee that everything is accurate or current. Manufacturers revise specifications, retailers change prices, and arithmetic has typos. Always verify against the manufacturer's own documentation before making a purchase or a safety decision, and tell us if you find an error — corrections get priority.

This site is provided “as is”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose or non-infringement.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Watt & Warden and Fathom & Foundry are not liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, consequential or punitive damages arising from your use of this site or from any purchase, installation or use of equipment described on it.

Purchasing decisions, installation decisions and safety decisions are yours. Use a licensed professional for anything that touches your electrical service.

Acceptable use
