What 5,000 watts actually covers

This is the size where a portable generator becomes a plausible answer to an outage rather than a way to charge phones. It covers the loads that make a house habitable and stops short of the loads that make it comfortable.

The pattern is clear once you see it. Motors that run intermittently are fine; anything that heats or cools continuously is not.

The advertised number is not the running number

This is the single most expensive misunderstanding in the category, and it is worst exactly at this size.

A generator advertised as "5,500 watts" is very often 5,500 peak and 4,500 running. Peak watts last a fraction of a second and exist to absorb a motor start. Running watts are what the machine will actually sustain, and that is the number your load list has to fit inside.

Add margin, then check the switch

Two adjustments turn a load total into a purchase.

Add 20%. Nameplate figures are optimistic and older appliances draw more than new ones. A 3,500W load list wants a 4,200W machine, not a 3,600W one.

Then check what your transfer switch allows. A 30A switch caps a house feed at 7,500W regardless of what the generator can produce — which means everything in this class fits, but also that upgrading the generator alone buys you nothing. The transfer switch page covers sizing both together.

What a 5,000 watt machine costs to run

At the roughly 0.75 gallons per hour figure this site uses and the EIA gasoline price documented on the methodology page, continuous running is expensive and block running is not.

The realistic pattern is four to six hours a day, split into blocks. A closed refrigerator holds temperature for hours between runs, a furnace only needs to bring the house back up periodically, and the freezer is fine. That turns a multi-day outage from eleven cans of gasoline into three. The fuel consumption page has the full arithmetic.

5,300 running watts is genuinely at the top of this class, and the practical significance is margin. A 30A transfer switch caps you at 7,500W, so a machine at 5,300 is comfortably inside the switch rather than fighting it.

Dual fuel matters more at this size than at any other. Five thousand watts burns gasoline fast enough that a multi-day outage becomes a fuel logistics problem, and propane sitting in a 20 lb cylinder solves the storage half of that.

The honest catch: propane costs you roughly 10% of the output, and a conventional machine at this size is loud enough to be a neighbor conversation.

Skip it ifyou want the machine to be quiet. This is a conventional generator and it sounds like one.

02Best 120/240V flexibility

DuroMax XP5500EH

4,500 running watts with a 120/240V selector and dual fuel operation.

The voltage selector is the interesting feature. Set to 120V, the machine puts its full output on one leg, which is what you want for cords and household loads. Set to 240V it splits, which is what a transfer switch and a well pump need.

That flexibility is genuinely useful for a machine that spends part of its life on a job site and part backing a house.

The honest catch: 4,500 running watts is the low end of this class, and the 224cc engine is small for the output. Expect it to work hard where the pick above loafs.

Skip it ifyou want every watt available at 120V simultaneously. The selector is a trade.

03Best if noise matters

An honest inclusion rather than a strict class member. It is 3,500 running watts, not 5,000 — but for a great many households that is enough, and the difference in how it behaves is large.

An inverter unit throttles the engine to the load, so it is quiet when lightly loaded rather than running flat out regardless. The architecture comparison explains what that changes, including the clean waveform that modern electronics prefer.

The honest catch: it is the most expensive way to get the fewest watts on this page. You are buying quiet and clean power, not capacity.

Skip it ifyou need the full 5,000W. This is a step down in output for a step up in civility.

04The step up worth pricing

Worth pricing before committing to the 5,000W class, because the gap between the two is often smaller than expected and the capability gap is not.

A well pump start, a central air compressor or an electric water heater will all defeat a 5,000W machine. If any of those are on your list, this is the honest size.

The honest catch: it burns considerably more fuel per hour and it is heavier to move. Buying more generator than you need costs you every time you run it.

Skip it ifyour load list genuinely fits inside 5,000W. This is a bigger, thirstier machine.

How these were chosen

We did not test these. Nobody at Watt & Warden has plugged one in. What we did instead: read the manufacturer's published specifications, compile them into a table where the figures line up, and compute the numbers manufacturers leave out — runtime against a real appliance load, and what an hour of running actually costs.

Anything that could not be sourced was left out rather than estimated, and every pick names the buyer who should skip it. The full method is here, including where it is weaker than a publisher with a test bench.

Questions people actually ask

What will a 5000 watt generator run?

A refrigerator and freezer, a furnace blower, a sump pump, lighting and the network -- comfortably, and mostly at the same time. What it will not run is central air conditioning, an electric water heater or an electric range, all of which need more than 5,000 watts sustained or on start.

Is a 5000 watt generator enough for a house?

For the circuits most people mean by backup, yes. For the whole panel, no. Backing up the fridge, freezer, furnace, sump pump and some lighting fits inside 5,000 running watts with margin. Adding central air or electric heat does not, and no amount of load management changes that.

Does 5000 watts mean running watts?

Usually not. Machines advertised at 5,000 or 5,500 watts are frequently 5,500 peak and 4,500 running. Peak watts last a fraction of a second to absorb a motor start; running watts are what the machine sustains, and that is the number your load list must fit inside.

Will a 5000 watt generator run a well pump?

It depends on the pump, and the plate on the pump is the only reliable answer. A 1/2 HP submersible pump often starts on this size; a 1 HP deep-well pump frequently does not, because the starting surge is several times the running draw. If the well is the reason you are buying, size up.

How much fuel does a 5000 watt generator use?

Around 0.75 gallons an hour at moderate load is the working figure used on this site. Running continuously that is about 18 gallons a day, which is more than most garages may legally store. Running in four to six hour blocks -- which keeps a fridge and freezer perfectly safe -- brings it to three to five gallons a day.
