Build the list before you look at machines

Generator sizing has one rule that eliminates most of the confusion: add every appliance's running watts, then add only the single largest starting surge. Motors almost never start at the same instant, and sizing for simultaneous startup buys a machine two or three times larger than the house needs.

Add the upper ends of the first four and you get 3,000W running. The largest single surge is the well pump at 2,000W, so the peak requirement is roughly 3,000 − 1,000 + 2,000 = 4,000W. A 5,300W machine covers that comfortably; a 3,500W one does not.

Match the purchase to the outage

Capacity is not a preference. It falls out of two numbers: how long your power is usually off, and what you refuse to lose while it is.

What an hour of generator costs

Nobody in this category publishes this, and it is computable from published figures. A mid-sized generator burns roughly 0.75 gallons an hour at half load. At the EIA's reported U.S. average of $4.071 a gallon for regular gasoline in the week ending 31 August 2026:

What it costs to actually run

The sticker price of a dual-fuel generator is a fraction of what it costs you. The sticker price of a battery is nearly all of it. Here is the arithmetic, with the inputs stated so you can redo it with your own fuel price.

The last row is the useful one. Running six hours a day rather than continuously costs a quarter as much, needs a quarter of the fuel, and keeps a fridge and freezer perfectly safe — because a sealed fridge holds temperature for about four hours and a full freezer for around 48. Run it in blocks, and use a battery to carry the quiet hours.

What a generator does that a battery cannot

It does not run out. That is the entire argument, and on day three of an outage it is the only argument that matters. A battery holds a fixed amount of energy; a generator with a fuel can beside it is limited only by how much fuel you can get.

The costs are real and worth stating: it is loud, it must live outdoors at least twenty feet from the house, it needs fuel you have to store and rotate, it needs oil changes, and it produces carbon monoxide that kills people after every major storm. Before you buy anything else

Two purchases matter more than which generator you choose. A transfer switch or interlock kit, because without one the generator cannot reach the furnace or the sump pump. And a working carbon monoxide alarm on every level of the house, because that is the failure that is not recoverable.

This is the size most households need and consistently buy past. A refrigerator, a half-horsepower furnace fan, a third-horsepower sump pump and lighting comes to roughly 1,500W running on Champion's published figures, with a peak near 3,200W. 5,300 running watts covers that with real margin for a microwave or a well pump on top.

The fuel economy is what distinguishes it: up to 14.5 hours on a 4.7-gallon tank, which is the longest run per gallon on this page. Over a multi-day outage that difference compounds into fewer trips with a can, which matters more than the money.

Dual fuel, remote electric start, an L14-30R transfer-switch outlet and a TT-30R RV outlet. On propane it drops to 4,800 running watts — the normal 10% penalty, and worth it for fuel that stores indefinitely.

Skip it ifyou have central air conditioning. A three-ton compressor needs 5,000–6,000W to start and this will not do it.

Champion 200988 4500W dual fuel inverter

4,500 starting watts of dual-fuel inverter power, throttling down when the load is light.

An inverter generator varies engine speed with load instead of holding 3,600 rpm regardless. At the partial loads a house actually draws overnight, that is a large and audible difference — and the reason to pay the inverter premium.

Dual fuel on an inverter is an unusual and genuinely useful combination: propane availability plus low noise in one machine. Electric start and an RV-ready TT-30R outlet.

3,500 running watts on gasoline is enough for a fridge, a furnace fan and lights, and not much more. If your list includes a well pump or a large window air conditioner, size up.

Skip it ifyou need to start a well pump. 3,500 running watts is the real figure and a one-horsepower pump can ask for 4,000W to start.

03Most headroom without going enormous

Westinghouse WGen9500DF

9,500 running watts with both a 30A transfer-switch outlet and a 50A RV outlet.

The case for this over the 5,300W machine is a well pump. Champion's chart puts a one-horsepower well pump at 1,000–2,000W running and 2,000–4,000W starting, and adding that to an existing critical load is what pushes a household past 5,000 watts.

The 14-50R 50A outlet is the other reason: it feeds a larger transfer switch or an RV directly, which the smaller machines cannot.

The trade is fuel. 6.6 gallons for up to 12 hours is a shorter run per gallon than the WGen5300DF manages, and a bigger engine at light load is running inefficiently. Buy this because you need the capacity, not as insurance.

Skip it ifyour critical load is under 3,000W. You will be running a 457cc engine at a fraction of its capacity, which is the least efficient way to use it.

Extension cords reach appliances with plugs. They do not reach a furnace, a well pump or a sump pump, because those are wired into the panel. This is what connects them.

Six 15A and four 20A circuits, rated to 30A and 7,500W, with two watt meters so you can balance the load across the generator's two legs instead of guessing. The break-before-make switching makes backfeed mechanically impossible.

Budget for the electrician. This ties into your service panel, needs a permit in most places, and the labor usually exceeds the hardware cost. Do it in the spring, not the week a storm is forecast.

Skip it ifyou only plan to run cords to a fridge and a lamp. That needs no switch and is perfectly legitimate.

How these were chosen

We did not test these. Nobody at Watt & Warden has plugged one in. What we did instead: read the manufacturer's published specifications, compile them into a table where the figures line up, and compute the numbers manufacturers leave out — runtime against a real appliance load, and what an hour of running actually costs.

Anything that could not be sourced was left out rather than estimated, and every pick names the buyer who should skip it. The full method is here, including where it is weaker than a publisher with a test bench.

Questions people actually ask

What size generator do I need for a power outage?

Add the running watts of everything on your critical list, then add only the single largest starting surge. For a typical house -- fridge, furnace fan, sump pump, lights -- that comes to about 4,000W peak, so a 5,000-5,500 running watt machine covers it with margin.

How much does it cost to run a generator per day?

At 0.75 gallons an hour and the EIA's reported $4.071 per gallon for the week ending 31 August 2026, continuous running is about $73 a day. Running in six-hour blocks -- which keeps a fridge and freezer perfectly safe -- costs about $18.

Can I plug a generator into a wall outlet?

No. Backfeeding through a wall outlet with a double-male cord energizes your house circuits and sends power up the utility line at lethal voltage. It kills lineworkers, it is illegal essentially everywhere, and a transfer switch exists specifically to make it impossible.

Is a bigger generator always better?

No. A large engine running at a fraction of its capacity burns more fuel than a right-sized one doing the same work, weighs more, costs more, and is louder. Size to your actual list plus the largest single surge, not to the worst case you can imagine.
