Generator Inlet Boxes Explained

The transfer switch gets all the attention. The inlet box is the part that lets the generator stay outdoors and the door stay shut — and it is the piece most people discover they are missing.

What an inlet box actually is

It is a weatherproof socket mounted on the outside wall of the house, wired back to a transfer switch or an interlock-equipped panel. Its connector is male — an inlet rather than an outlet — because power flows into the house through it.

You plug the generator's cord into it from outside. Nothing runs through a door or a window, nothing has to be threaded past a weather seal, and the generator can sit wherever it is safe to sit.

That is the whole function, and it is easy to dismiss as a convenience. It is not. It is what makes a correctly installed backup arrangement usable in the weather that caused the outage.

Why you cannot just run a cord through a window

  • The window has to stay open. Which puts an opening in the house in the direction of the machine producing carbon monoxide — precisely the arrangement every safety authority tells you to avoid.
  • Extension cords cannot reach hardwired circuits. The furnace, the well pump, the sump pump and the water heater have no plug. In a winter storm those are the loads you actually need.
  • A trapped cord is a damaged cord. A window sash closed onto a cable crushes insulation over time, and the failure is a fire or a shock, not an inconvenience.
  • Rain follows the cable. Water runs along a cord and into whatever it is plugged into.

And the alternative people reach for instead — a double-male "suicide cord" into a dryer outlet — energizes the utility line outside the house. It can kill a lineworker working on what they believe is a dead conductor, and it will destroy the generator when power returns. It is illegal everywhere in the United States.

Matching the ratings

Three things have to agree: the generator's outlet, the cord, and the inlet box. Get one wrong and the set does not connect.

Maximum wattage figures are the connector ratings expressed at their nominal voltage. Reliance rates the PB30 inlet box for generators up to 7,500 running watts and the 31410CRK transfer switch at 30 A / 7,500 W, which is where the pairing comes from. Your generator's own rated output is the other limit and it may be lower.

The mismatch worth naming: a TT-30 outlet looks like a 30A connection and is not one. It is 120V only, so it cannot feed a 240V transfer switch. Look for the four-prong twist-lock L14-30R on the generator, not the three-prong RV socket.

Where it goes

  • Near the electrical panel, on an exterior wall. Short runs of cable inside are cheaper and simpler than long ones.
  • Where the cord reaches a safe generator position — at least twenty feet from windows, doors and attached garages. Measure this before the electrician arrives.
  • Facing down or outward, so water cannot collect in the inlet.
  • Above likely snow depth if you are in a winter region. Waist height is typical.
  • Reachable in the dark, in the rain. You will use it exactly once a year, at the worst possible moment.

Installation and cost

This is licensed-electrician work. The inlet box is wired to the transfer switch or to the panel with an interlock, and in most jurisdictions the job requires a permit and an inspection.

In practice it is not a separate project — the inlet box is fitted as part of the transfer switch or interlock installation, and its marginal cost is small next to the labor of that job. What transfer switch installation costs covers the whole figure rather than this one part.

Do it out of season. During a storm warning no electrician is available, and this is the one component you cannot improvise safely.

The complete chain

Working from the machine inward, a correct portable setup is:

  1. A generator with a 240V twist-lock outlet, running outdoors at least twenty feet from the house.
  2. A cord rated for the full amperage, long enough to allow that distance.
  3. A NEMA 3R inlet box on the exterior wall.
  4. A transfer switch or panel interlock that makes backfeed mechanically impossible.
  5. The circuits you chose in advance — furnace, fridge, well pump, a few lights.

01The standard 30A inlet

NEMA 3R is the specification that matters. It means the enclosure is rated for outdoor use against rain and sleet, which a general-purpose indoor box is not. This one is steel with an anti-corrosive powder coat, mounted to face down or outward so water cannot sit in it.

The spring-loaded cap is the detail that decides how it ages. It sits closed for years between uses, and a box that fills with water is a box you cannot use in the storm you bought it for.

L14-30P is the male inlet that accepts a standard L14-30 generator cord, so it pairs directly with the transfer switches and cords sold at the same rating.

Skip it ifyour generator has a 50A outlet and you want its full output. Then you need a 50A inlet and a matching switch.

02The matching cord

The cord is what makes the twenty-foot carbon monoxide rule possible, and it has to be rated for the whole 30A rather than for what you think you will draw. 10-gauge copper across 25 feet is the standard answer.

Twist-lock connectors matter outdoors: they cannot be pulled apart by a foot catching the cable, which a straight-blade plug can.

Skip it ifyou need more distance. Buy one longer cord rather than joining two.

03What the inlet box connects to

An inlet box alone does nothing — it is one half of a pair. The other half is a transfer switch or an interlock kit, and the whole point is that the grid cannot be energized from your generator.

Break-before-make switching means the circuit is never connected to both sources at once, mechanically rather than by procedure. Transfer switch versus interlock kit compares the two routes.

Skip it ifyou are using an interlock kit on the panel instead. That is the other valid approach.

The one thing to verify before buying an inlet box is that your generator has a matching outlet. A machine with only 120V household sockets cannot feed a 240V transfer switch at all, which is the single most common mismatch in this whole area.

Skip it ifyou already own a machine with a 30A twist-lock outlet. Check before buying anything.

How these were chosen

We did not test these. Nobody at Watt & Warden has plugged one in. What we did instead: read the manufacturer's published specifications, compile them into a table where the figures line up, and compute the numbers manufacturers leave out — runtime against a real appliance load, and what an hour of running actually costs.

Questions people actually ask

What is a generator inlet box?

A weatherproof male socket mounted on an exterior wall and wired back to a transfer switch or interlock-equipped panel. You plug the generator cord into it from outside, so no cable runs through a door or window and the generator can stay the required distance from the house.

Do I need an inlet box if I have a transfer switch?

Almost always, yes. A transfer switch needs a feed from somewhere, and the inlet box is the weatherproof point where the generator cord connects. Some switch kits include a short pigtail cable instead, but that means a cable passing through an opening in the house, which is what an inlet box exists to avoid.

What size inlet box do I need?

Match it to your generator's outlet and your transfer switch. The common combination is 30A NEMA L14-30, which Reliance rates for generators up to 7,500 running watts. Larger portables use a 50A inlet rated to about 12,500W. A TT-30 RV outlet is 120V only and cannot feed a 240V house switch.

Can I install a generator inlet box myself?

It is licensed-electrician work in most jurisdictions, and typically requires a permit and inspection. It is also rarely a separate job -- it is normally fitted as part of the transfer switch or interlock installation, so its marginal cost is small against that labor.

Why can't I just run an extension cord through a window?
