The short answer
Yes if your power goes out for longer than about four hours with any regularity, or if you have something in the house that must not lose power — a sump pump, a medical device, a home office you cannot afford to lose a day of. No if your outages are brief and rare, in which case a flashlight and a closed freezer door do the job for nothing.
That sounds like a dodge. It is not — it is the actual answer, and the rest of this page is about finding out which one you are, because the data says households differ enormously.
Look up your own outage history
The EIA's Electric Power Annual for 2024 puts the average U.S. customer at eleven hours of interruption for the year. That average is close to useless as personal guidance, because the range behind it is enormous: customers in South Carolina averaged nearly 53 hours, while customers in Arizona, South Dakota, North Dakota and Massachusetts averaged under two.
Fifty-three hours a year against under two is not a difference of degree. It is a different purchase, or no purchase. Your utility publishes its own reliability figures, usually as SAIDI — the average duration of interruption per customer — and your state regulator publishes them too. What it is actually protecting
Work out what the outage costs you before deciding what to spend preventing it. In rough order of expense:
- A flooded basement. A sump pump has no power exactly when it is raining hardest. This is a five-figure repair and it is the strongest single case for backup power that exists — covered properly here.
- A freezer of food. Real money, though bounded, and partly solved for free by keeping the door shut. FoodSafety.gov puts a full freezer at roughly 48 hours unopened.
- A medical device. Not a cost question. A CPAP machine at Champion's published 30–60W without heat runs for many hours off even a small station, and this is the clearest yes in the whole category.
- Lost work. A day of a home office being offline has a real number attached, and most people know roughly what it is.
- Comfort. Genuine but hard to price. Being warm, having light and knowing what is happening outside is worth something on the second evening.
Where the money is genuinely wasted
Three patterns come up repeatedly and all three are avoidable.
Buying capacity for an outage you do not have. A 3kWh station bought by a household that loses power for two hours a year is a machine doing nothing for its whole life. Buy for your actual history, and if that history changes, buy again.
Buying a battery when you needed a generator. If your risk is a three-day ice storm, a battery of any size runs out on day one and then it is a heavy plastic box. That case needs fuel or solar, and the comparison is worth reading before you commit.
Buying an inverter too small for the load. The most common and most frustrating error: a station with plenty of watt-hours and a 300W or 600W inverter that will never start the appliance the buyer bought it for. Check the starting surge on the wattage chart first, then choose the capacity.
The argument nobody makes: use it the rest of the year
Emergency equipment that only exists for emergencies is expensive per use and reliably flat when the emergency arrives. A power station is unusual in that it has genuine non-emergency uses — camping, a workshop or yard with no outlet, a garage, tailgating, a market stall, a power cut in a rented flat.
A unit used ten times a year is cheaper per use by an order of magnitude and, more importantly, is charged and working when the storm comes, because you have handled it recently. That argues for buying slightly smaller and more portable than pure emergency logic suggests. It is the single best reason to choose a 24 lb unit over a 35 lb one at similar capacity.
The case against, stated properly
A power station is a battery, and batteries age whether you use them or not. LiFePO4 is far better than what came before, but a unit bought today and left charged in a closet for a decade will not have its original capacity when you finally need it. Manufacturers advise topping up every three to six months, which requires you to remember.
Stored energy is also finite in a way fuel is not. And per kilowatt-hour delivered, a generator is dramatically cheaper up front — several thousand watt-hours of generator capability costs a fraction of the same capability in lithium.
What you buy with that premium is silence, indoor safety, no maintenance, and a machine that starts. For plenty of households that is worth it. For plenty of others it is not, and we would rather you worked out which one you are than took a recommendation.
